Are you interested in STEM? Join the science club! This is a unique opportunity Alexia Rizea and I formed under the guidance of many teachers from the science department in 2020. Unfortunately, we were forced to stop the extracurricular when the pandemic hit.
This year, the club will conduct various science-oriented activities, including botany (growing plants and conducting experiments on them in the Greenhouse) and dissections (since this has been removed from the Biology 30 curriculum, we hope to supplement those areas of lab work with the help of the science teachers). Botany and dissections are just a starting point. As the club progresses, we will be offering workshops and labs in other scientific areas, such as computer science, physics, and chemistry. Furthermore, we will provide tips on how to successfully apply to paid science internships. We also hope to engage in community events like the farmer’s market and even kickstart our own projects (based on interest evaluated via group consensus), for which students could earn volunteer hours. If any of this interests you, APPLY! We hope to conduct one meeting per week, but the days are not set—they will vary upon everyone’s availability each week (which will be communicated via a poll). Meeting locations are not yet decided. Consistent attendance is not mandatory, but is recommended if you are interested in more than one specific niche, or wish to broaden your sights to other scientific areas.
Communication will be held on Discord and Google Classroom. Any help from teachers relating to classroom-use and/or activity ideas would be appreciated!
