When people ask me why I’m a Liberal, I can never come up with one answer; but, for a simple answer, I wholeheartedly believe that regardless of who and where someone comes from, he or she should have every opportunity to provide for themselves, acquire a good education, and live a good life.
We live in a society where constant reinvention and experimentation are the building blocks of success. Leading into his campaign, Justin Trudeau always seemed willing to test his boundaries and stand with the people. Trudeau has been seen supporting feminist movements; he created the first gender-balanced cabinet, where women hold 15 of 31 posts compared to the 12 of 39 posts under Conservatives (2015). Recently, he has also been seen supporting the Black Lives Matter Movement in Ottawa. Justin Trudeau’s skills lay in his ability to connect with diverse ranges of people. Leadership requires the ability to continually step out of your comfort zone and to do so with a diverse range of people, which is exactly what Trudeau has accomplished in his term.
Among their other health commitments, Trudeau’s party promises funding to reduce hospital wait times and prioritize mental health by facilitating the hiring of new health workers. While the other parties have not yet released any formal statement on how they plan to move forward, the Liberals are the first to make this powerful statement. This goal is a pressing matter as mental health awareness has gained a larger platform and became increasingly prevalent amidst the pandemic. By promising to do this, Trudeau yet again reaches another target audience of Canadians. If he is to be re-elected and successful in this goal, life for all present and future Canadians can be ameliorated.
The truth is, Canada has never elected a federal government that was not Liberal or Conservative, and that’s not going to change in this next election. This does not mean that we as citizens are going to agree wholeheartedly with all the decisions of the future winning party. To shed some hope on this election, when young people go out and vote, governments will make policy decisions that benefit young people. So, I leave you with this: no matter who or where you come from, everyone has a voice that deserves to be heard. If you are eligible to vote in this election, vote liberal and create the change you want to see in Canada.
